Mastering photoshop burn tool
Here is a very simple tutorials describes the effective use of burn tool in photoshop. As the name suggest burn tools burns to make shade. We shall move to a simple example so you can clearly understand how can we use it effectively.
Here I’m creating a illustration of sky island with major use of burn tool only. For that draw a mountain outline using your pentool like this
Now fill the path with green color
Now the mountain outline is ready. We may add some noise to the shape so as to feel grassy. (Filter>>Noise>>Add Noise). Noise amount nearly ’6′ will be fine.
Now we may taketo the ‘burn tool’ to make it a perfect looking mountain.
Countine shading the edges, simply like you use the brush.
Hope you got the idea of shading. I’m finishing the shading here. So it looks a cool mountain like in a 3D art, remember we just used a filled shape and burn tool. So the mountain is ready now we may convert it to a sky island, like what you see in AVATAR. For that I’m adding road to the footer of the mountain, a road which goes around the mountain. We may do that simply with two ovals and a rock pattern texture.
See the first black oval and some line above that made a road. Now we may add the stoned edge of the road, simply with another grey colored oval and a rock texture
See i have also added some trees here and there on the mountain to make it more realistic. And now our road is also ready. Now we have to add the earth. First collect some earth stock image or texture (Google it what else?). See what i did
The earth is ready now it does not holds a 3D look. Again back to our burn tool, the shade maker
See how i shaded it using the burn, tool. Now the sky island is is ready. You may add sky, coluds etc, to make it more attractive. Here is what i did.
Hope you enjoyed the tutorial, do your experiments. Wait for some more interesting articles. And consider a subscription also. Thanks for your time.
